The Unraveling Chronicles
Unraveling is the word, or rather state of being, that comes to mind, when we start to dive into areas where there is a lot of work to do, and the nature of what likes within that work isn’t clear. It is buried beneath layers that reveal themselves as we go through them. For me, unraveling is also coupled with surprise, much like reaching into a treasure chest and not knowing what you will find. Interestingly this is how I viewed pier fishing, which I used to love in my early 20s. I had watched my grandfather fish and sometimes he would take me with him. Casting a line off into the giant Pacific Ocean always held the mysterious surprise at the end of the line, with “what was going to wander my way?”. I found it exciting!
And so, as I unravel the tangled array of emotions, imprints, and physical manifestations held within my pelvic floor and all that good second chakra stuff, I am continually bringing myself back to that excitement. What gems will I find that have been tucked so far away that they feel disconnected (nothing is ever truly disconnected)? What will emerge that I get to reconvene with? This feels like a much easier approach than the all to common dread that accompanies the deep and hard work.
Words are fascinating.
Today I looked up the etymology of the word “unravel”, which of course, comes from “ravel”. I was surprised by what I found.
1580s, "to entangle, become entwined confusedly," also "to untangle, disentangle, unwind" (originally with out), from Dutch ravelen "to tangle, fray," rafelen "to unweave," from rafel"frayed thread," which is of uncertain origin. The seemingly contradictory senses of this word (ravel and unravel are both synonyms and antonyms) might be reconciled by its roots in weaving and sewing: as threads become unwoven, they get tangled. The "entangling" meaning is the "more original" sense according to OED. From 1590s in the figurative sense of "make plain or clear;" 1610s as "make a minute and careful investigation." The intransitive sense, of fabric, "become untwisted or disjointed thread from thread" is by 1610s.
Immediately upon seeing the contradiction here, with meaning of both entangle and disentangle and then the reference to weaving and sewing, I thought “Of course! We may unravel something, but in that unraveling, there is something new woven together as it emerges from wherever it is that we have hidden in away.” (and for the sake of these chronicles, where we have hidden those things away is in our pelvic area…..which, you will discover through these chronicles is connected to everything else. Not figuratively. Literally. Physically. And there is another roar from the crowd cheering in my head “of course……everything is connected to everything else!”
The pelvic floor isn’t something that is talked about much. I think most people don’t even realize what it is. I knew it existed, but until fairly recently, I didn’t know much about it. And when I started to learn about it, I was shocked and quite dismayed at my lack of knowledge. In my energy work, the pelvic area is the seat of our power. It is the area that holds life to be brought into being, if you are a woman. If you are a man, it is the area that holds the ability for life to come into being. Or something like that - wow, oversimplification!
Over the past year I have been exploring this subject through the workings of my own physical body and watching as shifts and changes occurred, with unravelings and then ravelings in a different direction as emotions and traumas and all sorts of other things emerged for me to look at. What has come up has been challenging, scary, healing, and empowering. And I am still working on it. And sometimes, at least in the nature in which I write (Remember CV Chronicles?), this is when the sharing is at it’s best, at it’s raw brutal honestly with stories told in real time before they have a change to ferment and become more palatable.
So from time to time, I will be touching on this subject under “The Unraveling Chronicles”.
I hope it will help people. I hope it will encourage greater conversation around this.
A Note:
Pelvic Floor Therapy is a hot topic right now that is beginning to become trendy. This is always a double edged sword. On one hand, attention to this area is very much needed. On the other hand, everyone’s trying to sell you something along with their opinions on why their way is THE BEST WAY. As I have been meandering this road, I have seen a great deal of really amazing things. I have also seen a good amount of things I would say might be borderline dangerous. I have nothing to sell you here. I am not a pelvic floor expert.
(I work with one here in Maine that is amazing - should anyone want a referral). I am someone who is gaining awareness through my own being and all that makes up the me that I am. I am exploring and researching and experimenting with herbals, flower essences, energy work, and a handful of other things to bring me deeper into connection and understanding. I plan to share my resources and experiences and I encourage you to take them all with a grain of salt. Feel out what feels right to you……always.
