It. may surprise you to learn that fear is not an emotion. It is an emotion blocker. Fear prevents us from feeling emotions that are hard for us to feel. In this way it is protecting us. Sometimes we have felt an emotion that was painful and when a situation hints at that same emotion, fear comes in, as a way to protect us feeling that emotion again.
What is your fear about? Is is about something in the present moment or in the past? What emotion is your fear helping you to not feel? Ask it. Listen. Acknowledge.
Often simply acknowledging the underlying emotion is enough to dissipate our fear. It is important to thank our fear for helping to keep us safe. We can also let it know that it is no longer needed.
